With a name like William Thomas Clarke III, it would seem that he was destined to be a lawyer, or at least aristocracy – we would guess he will settle for being a lawyer.
William (“Bill”) Clarke attended the University of Alberta for his formal legal education, taking special interest in Family Law. During this time he was employed at one of the Okanagan’s largest law firms as a summer student, and then the Kelowna Courthouse Registry as a clerk in both the Supreme and Provincial Courts. He articled with the firm that shortly thereafter was renamed “Johnson & Clarke”. Since 2006, he has worked with the law firm of Hattori, Shaw & Clarke, which has now become The Courtyard Law Offices.
“highly active in his community”
Since graduation from Law School, Bill continues to be highly active in his community. He acted as the Interim Chair of the U2K (University 2000) committee, in which he was instrumental in initiating a community-based movement that desired the conversion of the local Okanagan University College, to become the full status University of British Columbia Okanagan Campus. As an avid Rescue SCUBA Diver and Medic First Aid, he served as a board member of Project C.O.O.L. (Clean Our Okanagan Lakes), in which he was an instrumental fundraiser, and guiding hand. Just when you think that was not enough, he became the Captain of the Paddlin’ on M.T. Dragon Boat team, and part of Rotary International, Kelowna Downtown Chapter!
“he is an active fundraiser, and guiding hand”
Since 1995, Bill has also been a member in the Canadian Bar Association, British Columbia Branch, pursuing the positions of Secretary, Vice-Chair, Co-Chair and Chair of the Okanagan Criminal Justice Section and member of the Okanagan Family Subsection. In this capacity he was responsible for all aspects of organization and activism. In 2000, Bill was instrumental in creating a Young Lawyers-Okanagan Section, and served as section co-chair, while also being a representative to the Provincial Council Executive of the CBA-BC. In this capacity, he was one of 9 lawyers who served approximately 12,000 lawyers in British Columbia. Furthermore, Bill was a recipient of the 2004 Outstanding Legal Service Award, for his contributions to the legal community, and City of Kelowna! In 2006, Bill received the President’s Medal from the CBA, and shortly thereafter was Federally Appointed to preside as the Chair (quasi-Judicial appointment) for the CPP-OAS Review Tribunals of Canada. What a year and what a change it made in his practice style to become someone who Judges the cases of others!
